There are so many business ideas these days. From new software to apps, there is no shortage of opportunities that could potentially be lucrative and successful. But how do you know if your idea will make it? If a company has been around for over 25 years with annual revenue of more than $3 billion, chances are they have seen the ups and downs first-hand—and their advice can be invaluable to entrepreneurs looking to start out on the right foot.

I’ve come up with a slew of fresh company concepts. How can I know which ones are the most worthwhile to pursue?
Most business owners want their company to expand, which frequently means considering new goods or services. However, brainstorming new ideas may often get in the way of sustaining the core company by diverting the owner’s attention away from the problems at hand. It helps to have a mechanism in place for dealing with fresh ideas so that they may flourish without being stifled.
A new concept may seem thrilling at first, but will it hold up after a few days? Is it more important to spend time on a fresh concept or is it simply a method to escape an unpleasant corporate task? The first stage in this method is to jot down an idea, date it, and file it for at least two weeks. This guarantees that the concept is remembered and that it does not interfere with the main business.
Schedule a time to examine the ideas in the file on a regular basis, such as twice a month. If a concept still appeals to you after two weeks, it’s time to consider if it’s practical. In an ideal world, ideas would be examined via the business plan process, but time constraints often prevent this. Instead, consider the following 10 questions as a starting point for your investigation:
- What connection does this concept have to my company’s mission?
- Is this concept intended to replace an out-of-date product or service?
- Is it possible that putting this concept into action will result in a surplus of capacity?
- Who are the new product or service’s target customers?
- What value do you provide consumers that they can’t obtain anyplace else?
- What are the financial advantages and disadvantages?
- What level of dedication do you have to this concept as the owner?
- Who else is dedicated to or collaborating on this concept?
- What steps must be done to take the idea from concept to reality?
- When will you take steps to bring this concept to market?
Only new ideas that enhance company performance in some manner, such as boosting earnings, using surplus capacity, or enhancing customer service for current customers, should be adopted. Include them in the company’s next business plan update. Begin putting the plan into action as outlined in the previous two questions’ action actions. While some ideas are excellent, they may not be a suitable match for the current company. It’s better to toss these ideas out or pass them on to someone else to execute so that the owner’s main company may benefit from his or her undivided attention.
If new ideas are strategically sound, they may help companies grow. Any method that aids in the analysis of ideas is beneficial to the company owner, so discover the approach that best suits your needs.
