The world has suddenly become a whole lot more complicated for business owners. It’s not just about running your company anymore, there are now new rules to follow and it can be hard to know who you need on your team in order to handle all the heavy lifting.

Let’s start with “programmers are awesome.” Tomorrow (September 13) is International Programmer’s Day (which always falls on the 256th day of the year, which is somewhat of an inside joke among programmers), and I’d want to take a step back and appreciate how far we’ve come.
The computational capability of today’s mobile phones is more than ten times that of the first Cray supercomputer. Most current electronic toys (such as my daughter’s pet dog, which sings and speaks her name) are more powerful than the computer systems that sent us to the moon. There are still days when I am astounded that I can video chat with my mother to allow her to see her grandchildren without having to travel. Every day, the technical power we have at our fingers, as well as the simplicity with which we utilize it, is really amazing. And yet, like everyone else, I am guilty of taking it all for granted—thinking of technology as a tool, something to be used without thinking about, something to make things easier. I’m just as irritated as the next person when something doesn’t operate the way I want it to or as quickly as I want it to.
So, when I’m irritated because I can’t seem to locate the precise, particular, ideal piece of software that does exactly what I want in the manner I believe it should be done (at the time, since what I think I need could change tomorrow), I have to remind myself of reality. I have to remind myself of the enormous amount of skill, passion, and really hard work that has gone into each of these technology instruments that I use on a daily basis without thinking about it. The alarm clock that goes off in the morning and snoozes for nine minutes (seriously, nine minutes? Someone had to program it (why nine?) What about the electric toothbrush? There’s a good chance there’s a chip inside that has to be programmed. Someone had to program the obnoxious “ding ding ding” that alerts me my keys are still in the ignition. My garage door opener’s radio transmitter, as well as my vehicle door remote, are both preset. The computerized engine monitoring, the red traffic signals that only appear when I’m running late (how do they know? ), the parking garage gate… All of this was done by programmers. All of this happens before I’ve even turned on my computer and started my day.
From the mundane to the vital—from the camera I used to photograph my newborn children to the medical equipment that kept them both alive—an army of programmers is responsible.
I take everything for granted, but I also know from personal experience that programming is difficult. Programming entails considering all of a thing’s usual uses as well as all of its possible illogical applications. It’s a combination of problem-solving and stress-inducing activities, as well as boundary-breaking and community-building. Every day, programmers struggle to link us all in ways our predecessors could never have dreamed. It’s not an easy job, but every day offers new problems, new ideas, new methods of communicating, new solutions, and new accomplishments.
Take a moment to appreciate a programmer you know for all of the hard work they put in. Take a minute to appreciate what all of the nameless programmers out there have provided you if you don’t know a coder. Without them, the world as you know it would not exist.
